Escape before the kids break for summer with these 5 budget-friendly destinations.
York
June spells magic in the former fortified city of York. This quaint, northern UK city provides medieval charm with traditional streets lined by delightful storefronts built around one of the city’s most important cultural site, York Minster. You can easily explore the town on foot and discover the historical sights within the city walls. If you have more time to spare, the nearby Yorkshire Dales National Park offers more views of rolling green hills and historical sites. Take the scenic route from Settle to Carlisle passing through tunnels and viaducts across the Dales for the perfect long weekend.
Cornwall
With quiet beaches and seaside fishing villages, Cornwall is ideal for a UK summer break. The home of cream tea offers towns for every type of traveller. Falmouth can be found in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and offers a selection of art galleries and maritime history. For miles of beautiful beaches, visit the quaint fishing village Padstow, which attracts visitors with its old town charm. If you’re looking for something a little greener, explore The Eden Project or wander The Lost Gardens Heligans, a sub-tropical estate. We suggest driving to make the most of your time in Cornwall.
Bath
Arguably one of the UK’s most beautiful cities, this iconic sandstone settlement famed for its Roman Baths should keep any city-goer content. Admire architectural mastery at Bath Abbey or dive into the life of one of Britain’s favourite authors at the Jane Austen Centre. Wander well-maintained laneways or soak up natural splendour along the skyline walk offering views of vast meadows and lush woodlands. A stay in Bath wouldn’t be complete without a little self-care, so book in for a spa treatment so you can head home feeling well rested.
Venturing further afield won’t always prove more expensive, with costs on the ground in these European destinations proving cheaper than a lot of UK staycations.
Budapest
This central European capital is still flying under the radar despite its thriving food culture, a wealth of history and more activities than you could ask for on a weekend break. Divided by the Danube River, the city is rich in cultural history. Here you can visit Fisherman’s Bastion, Buda Castle, Matthias Church and experience incredible views over the city from Citadella.
Pest, east of the river, offers more lively options as well as a selection of traditional baths, perfect for unwinding. A true foodie mecca, it also offers a choice of local and international cuisines to suit every palate. The city is easily navigated by well-connected transport options including a regular tram and bus network throughout.
Sicily
Sicily is where the Italians go on holiday, so you know you’re onto a good thing. The Mediterranean’s largest island not only provides a slower pace of life, but is everything you’d expect from an Italian getaway, minus the hefty price tag. With two international airports, exploring the north-west and south-east of the island is easy.
Either hire a car to discover secluded beaches and small villages including Noto and Cefalu or find a base and opt for day excursions to explore larger towns such as Taormina and Syracuse. Seafood is plentiful and fresh, so be sure to indulge as you’ll be visiting the home of Arancini, Caponata and Pasta con le Sarde, with meals and wine often coming in for less than €10 per person.
